Çıralı and Olympos: a different stretch of coast

Çıralı and Olympos offer a different sort of stay from the more developed resorts along Turkey's Mediterranean coast. In Çıralı, small guesthouses sit among gardens and citrus trees, and the long beach is part of everyday life. Olympos feels more informal, with ancient ruins, bungalow accommodation and a younger travelling crowd. Between the two are wooded hills, rocky coves and the natural flames of Yanartaş. You can spend a morning on the beach and still have time to visit an ancient city or walk up to the flames later in the day.

Close to Antalya and Kemer

The area is within reach of Antalya, Kemer and the airport, yet it feels quite different once you arrive. It suits visitors who would rather stay in a garden guesthouse than a large hotel complex, without committing to a much longer journey west along the coast.

Çıralı Beach and loggerhead turtles

Çıralı's long beach is a nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Respect marked nesting zones and any seasonal restrictions; the beach is a protected habitat as well as a place to swim.

Ancient Olympos

The ruins of Olympos sit among trees and beside the watercourse leading towards the beach. The setting is part of the attraction: archaeological remains appear throughout the greenery rather than on a bare, open site.

Yanartaş and the Chimera

Natural gas flames burn among the rocks at Yanartaş, long associated with the legend of the Chimera. The walk uphill is especially atmospheric towards evening. Take a torch for the return and wear shoes with a good grip.

Pirates, coves and the maritime past

The coast's small inlets and ancient harbour settlements reflect a long history of seafaring, trade and conflict. Olympos is part of that story; its landscape is more interesting than any embellished pirate tale.

The Lycian Way and Gelidonya Lighthouse

The route towards Gelidonya Lighthouse offers pine-covered paths, open sea views and a sense of distance from the resort towns. Check the route and weather before walking, and allow time to get back in daylight.

Karaöz

Karaöz is a useful base for exploring the quieter coastline around the Gelidonya peninsula and for walks towards the lighthouse. It is not a conventional resort, and that is part of its appeal: the setting is more about the sea, the surrounding hills and access to the trails than a long list of organised attractions.

Adrasan

Adrasan has a broad bay, beach accommodation and access to boat excursions. It is a practical base for a few days if you want to explore the coves east of Olympos.

Suluada from Adrasan

Boat trips from Adrasan often visit Suluada, known for pale rock and clear water. It can be busy in summer, so avoid expecting an empty beach. Confirm the route, swimming stops and departure arrangements with the operator; plans can change with conditions.

Bays and boat trips

Local boat excursions offer a way to see stretches of shore that are harder to reach by road. They suit anyone who wants to swim in coves, look back at the mountains from the water and spend a day without repeatedly getting in and out of the car. Compare the actual itinerary, departure point and swimming stops rather than booking solely on the number of advertised bays.

Cycling around Çıralı

Within Çıralı, cycling can be a pleasant way to travel between the beach, gardens, guesthouses and local cafés. It is more about getting around at an easy pace than a demanding cycling route. Traffic and gradients change once you leave the village, so plan any longer ride with care.

Diving and other sea activities

Unlike Kaş, this stretch of coast is better known for swimming, boat outings and time in the coves than for diving centres. Ask local operators about kayaking and any available diving, the experience required and seasonal schedules.

Combining Çıralı, Olympos and Adrasan

These places work well as separate outings or a short stay rather than a rushed checklist. Leave time for the beach, Olympos's ruins and a visit to Yanartaş, then decide whether to extend the trip towards Adrasan.
