Patara — where ancient Lycia meets the Mediterranean
Patara was one of the principal cities of ancient Lycia and an important harbour on the Mediterranean. Today the archaeological site and the long sandy beach create one of the most distinctive day trips from Kaş.
What to see in the ancient city
Allow time for the monumental gateway, theatre, bouleuterion, colonnaded street, baths and the remains connected with Patara’s former harbour. The site is spread across an open landscape, so a slower visit is more rewarding than a quick stop.
Patara and the Lycian League
Patara was politically important within the Lycian League. Visiting it together with Xanthos and Letoon gives a much clearer picture of the region’s ancient history than seeing the sites in isolation.
Patara Beach
The archaeological landscape opens towards one of the longest sandy beaches on this part of the Turkish Mediterranean. Access and protected areas can be regulated seasonally, so follow local signs and current conservation rules during your visit.
From Kaş
